Polished obsidian can look uniformly black at first glance, then reveal charcoal, brown, translucence, bubbles, or reflected bands as it turns in the light.
It forms when silica-rich molten rock cools before an ordered crystal structure can grow.
It is brittle and breaks with conchoidal fractures that can create very sharp edges.
